A paranormal romantic suspense novel, a fairly clean read (no sex scenes), and a really fun near future book.
Rue works at a rescue center (as a volunteer?) and operates an equine rescue from her country house. She falls in love with the big brown eyes of a massive dog awaiting adoption or death, and takes him home. Little does she imagine what she's inviting in, nor what trouble follows.
This book includes one of the funniest scenes I've read in a while (when Rue learns what and who her new rescue really is) and one of the funniest one-liners ("Oh, no. Not again."), too. Overall the book is great: good clear writing style, well fleshed characters, a reasonably well developed universe, and a good, fun, interesting plot. The climax is a tad too easily won and the romance happens a bit too quickly and smoothly, but then, it is a novella and everything has to move fast.
Author Ann Cathey was always a good writer, even back in middle school (oh, hell), and this is a great start to a series. Another author to follow and I'm looking forward to the next story. Four and a half strong stars.
Wolf in the Fold in available from Amazon for $1.99. Now that's a price point you don't see very often any more, not after the Smashwords blog post on pricing (here's the link, point #4).
Cheers and happy reading,
